Dr. Festus Akande, the Director of Press and Information for the Supreme Court, reassured that the recent fire incident that affected a portion of the court’s premises did not impact the operations of the presidential election petition tribunal. The fire incident occurred in some sections of the Supreme Court located in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday. Prompt response from the police and firefighters successfully brought the situation under control.
In his response to the incident during an interaction with journalists, Akande clarified that only one chamber of the Supreme Court was affected by the fire, and it was swiftly extinguished using fire extinguishers. He further explained that the damage in that chamber was limited to books, stationery, and various computer equipment. Fortunately, the books are replaceable as the Supreme Court maintains an e-library with digital copies of the materials. Additionally, hard copies of the books can be procured and supplied to the chamber, making it clear that the incident had no bearing on the Presidential Election Petition proceedings.
Akande emphasized that matters related to presidential election issues are not deliberated within that particular chamber within the court.
