Tinubu vows to bolster healthcare in Nigeria through partnership with Rotary International

President Bola Tinubu has affirmed the commitment of the federal government to align closely with development-focused organizations, particularly Rotary International, to improve healthcare quality and access across Nigeria.

In a statement by his Special Adviser to the President Media and Publicity Chief Ajuri Ngelale said this announcement came during a meeting between President Tinubu and Rotary International President, Mr. Gordon McInally, alongside other dignitaries, at the State House in Abuja on Friday.

President Tinubu praised Rotary International for its significant contributions to Nigeria’s health sector, citing its latest grant of $14 million to support polio surveillance efforts in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). He emphasized the government’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians and ensuring they are not hindered by diseases.

In his address, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for Rotary International’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian causes, particularly its pivotal role in eradicating polio across Africa and addressing various health challenges. He also commended the volunteers from Rotary Clubs in Nigeria for their pivotal role in supporting polio eradication initiatives.

President Tinubu assured that the government, led by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, would remain actively engaged and available to support Rotary International’s initiatives.

In response, Mr. Gordon McInally recognized President Tinubu’s unwavering support for healthcare interventions benefiting disadvantaged Nigerians. He extended an honorary Rotary membership to President Tinubu in acknowledgment of his efforts to enhance Nigeria’s health sector.

During the meeting, Mr. McInally highlighted Nigeria’s crucial support for global polio eradication efforts, leading to its certification as a polio-free nation in 2020. He stressed the importance of sustained vigilance to prevent the resurgence of polio, particularly in regions like the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Looking ahead, Mr. McInally pledged Rotary International’s continued collaboration with the Nigerian government to address challenges related to infant and maternal mortality, emphasizing the significance of collective efforts in achieving substantial progress.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment of the federal government and Rotary International to advance healthcare delivery in Nigeria, marking a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of the Nigerian populace.
