UNIC highlights peace, security, and information integrity as key priorities in Nigeria

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Nigeria has identified peace and security, human rights, and information integrity as its critical focus areas for the year.

In advancing partnerships for advocacy and sensitization on UN themes and mandates, UNIC convened a partners’ briefing engagement in Abuja. The online engagement, held on Thursday, focused on UNIC’s 2025 priorities and was presided over by UNIC Director Ronald Kayanja, with participation from 106 partner organizations across the country.

Kayanja highlighted significant milestones in 2025, including the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the 10th year of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), COP 30, the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the Pact for the Future.

He emphasized the importance of addressing challenges in the information ecosystem, stating, “We will work with partners to combat misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, implementing the Global Principles for Information Integrity and relevant aspects of the Global Digital Compact.”

Participants were also briefed on UN International Days and the need for collaboration with stakeholders for their observance. Attendees commended UNIC’s leadership in engaging NGOs to discuss UN priorities.

Efe Okobia, President of the Nigeria Environmental Society, called for greater UNIC involvement in civil society activities. Tayo Olosunde, Executive Director of Mind The Gap Initiative, advocated for increased use of technology to enhance inclusivity and participation.

Foluke Ademokun of Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation and Doyin Ogunye of the Recycling Scheme for Women and Youth Empowerment (RESWAYE) stressed the need for stronger collaboration among NGOs with shared values.

A similar engagement is planned for journalists in print, electronic, and online media.
