Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) that some Muslim women were harassed for wearing hijab in hospitals within Maiduguri.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, the governor expressed deep concern over MURIC’s claims, emphasizing that although no official report or complaint had previously reached the government, the matter would be treated with the utmost seriousness.
Zulum directed the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Mallam Gana, to carry out a comprehensive inquiry to determine the authenticity of the allegations.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upholding the religious rights and dignity of all citizens, particularly women, the governor stressed that Borno State — being a predominantly Muslim society — holds the hijab in high regard and will not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination against women who choose to wear it.
“The welfare and rights of our citizens, especially our mothers, wives, and daughters, are paramount. We have zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or harassment. While we have no prior record of such complaints, we are not taking these allegations lightly. This investigation will be swift and transparent, and if any wrongdoing is found, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken immediately,” Zulum stated.
He also called on members of the public, especially those who may have experienced such treatment, to come forward with credible information to aid the investigation.
Governor Zulum assured residents that his administration would not condone any action that targets or humiliates any segment of the population.
