Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has urged the federal government to expedite the reconstruction of the collapsed dyke at Alau Dam, which caused severe flooding in Maiduguri and nearby areas, including Konduga and Jere local governments.
Constructed between 1984 and 1986, the Alau Dam was designed to provide water for irrigation and domestic use in Maiduguri. Its recent collapse led to widespread flooding, prompting Zulum to push for immediate federal intervention.
The governor’s appeal followed the submission of a report by a state-appointed committee that assessed the cause of the dyke’s collapse. Speaking on Monday, Zulum stressed the urgency of the reconstruction, warning that delays could lead to further disasters with the onset of rainfall in March.
“We have limited time,” Zulum said. “By next week, it will be January, and rainfall will begin in some parts of Borno State by March. If we wait for bureaucracy, we risk running out of time. If there’s no action soon, I will personally meet with the President to request that the Northeast Development Commission take over the project immediately.”
The governor noted that temporary measures have been implemented to minimize further damage but emphasized the need for permanent solutions. He assured that the state government, despite financial constraints, would collaborate with federal authorities to prevent future flooding.
“As a responsible government, we cannot wait for another disaster to occur. We will continue to partner with the federal government and take proactive measures,” Zulum added.
The governor’s call underscores the importance of swift action to rebuild critical infrastructure and mitigate the risks of future flooding in Borno State.
