The Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC) took place nationwide on Saturday, marking another year of rigorous academic engagement and talent showcase.
Organized by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in collaboration with the esteemed National Mathematical Centre, this year’s competition drew over 10,000 students ranging from primary 5 and 6 to JSS 1, 2, and 3. Spanning across 35 centers in 30 states throughout Nigeria, ANMC stands as a pinnacle event in the nation’s educational landscape, particularly within the realm of Mathematics.
With a longstanding tradition spanning 21 years, the ANMC has entrenched itself as a hallmark of excellence in Nigeria’s educational narrative, specifically within the discipline of Mathematics. Serving as the largest and most prestigious mathematics competition in the country, ANMC provides a paramount platform for students to exhibit their mathematical prowess.
The competition transcends cultural, ethnic, and religious boundaries, attracting participants from diverse backgrounds and demonstrating exemplary mathematical acumen.
According to Mr. Erdal Yilmaz, the ANMC Coordinator, the primary objective of the competition is to assess students’ problem-solving abilities and mathematical reasoning skills. By presenting young mathematicians nationwide with a series of challenging mathematical problems, ANMC fosters confidence and a genuine passion for mathematics, ultimately nurturing the next generation of mathematical leaders. Mr. Yilmaz further emphasized the competition’s role in offering scholarship awards to deserving participants.
Addressing journalists on behalf of the Coordinator at the Abuja Centre of the Competition (Nigerian Tulip International School, Wuse), Assistant Coordinator Shahbaz Malik underscored the paramount importance of mathematics in daily life. He articulated the organizers’ dedication to nurturing a profound love for mathematics among young learners, starting from primary school and extending to the secondary level, thereby facilitating a seamless transition into higher scientific pursuits.
Mr. Malik elucidated the competition structure, comprising two rounds of rigorous problem-solving. Qualifiers from the two geo-political zones advance to the second round, where top-performing students vie for coveted cash prizes, scholarships, and other accolades. Additionally, the teachers and schools of second-round qualifiers receive commendation and recognition for their role in nurturing academic excellence.
Moreover, successful participants gain access to full-tuition scholarship opportunities at Nigerian Tulip International Colleges, further incentivizing academic achievement and educational pursuit.
In his remarks, Mr. Fevzullah Bilgin, the Managing Director of NTIC, articulated the broader aspirations of ANMC beyond the competition arena. Beyond the allure of prizes, the competition aims to kindle a fervent passion for innovation and inspiration in mathematics and related scientific disciplines among the youth, nurturing their dreams and aspirations for future careers.
Echoing the sentiments of many parents, Omotayo Rubangs expressed appreciation for the organizers, acknowledging the competition’s instrumental role in fostering a newfound interest in mathematics among Nigerian children. Reflecting on her son’s dedicated preparation for the competition, she attested to its transformative impact on academic engagement and motivation.
Participants, buoyed by optimism and determination, expressed their aspirations to emerge victorious in the competition and pursue careers with a strong mathematical foundation, embodying the enduring spirit of academic excellence and ambition.
