Kwankwaso condemns state of emergency in Rivers

Former Kano State Governor and Presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly condemned the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, calling it unconstitutional and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

In a detailed statement, Kwankwaso criticized the suspension of Governor Similayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected state legislators, describing it as a dangerous overreach of executive power. He warned that the move undermines democratic principles and could set a dangerous precedent for future political interference. “At this stage of our democracy, this action by President Tinubu is not only unconstitutional but also a recipe for anarchy and disregard for the highest public office in the state,” Kwankwaso stated.

He expressed disappointment over the National Assembly’s quick endorsement of the state of emergency, noting that the use of a voice vote rather than a transparent voting process violated constitutional procedures.

“The legislature is meant to hold the executive accountable, not to act as a rubber stamp. The hasty ratification of this decision by both chambers is alarming and undermines the democratic leadership structure in Rivers State,” he added.

Kwankwaso also criticized the decision to deploy the military into a leadership position in Rivers State, calling it a reversal of the progress made since Nigeria’s return to democracy. He warned that such actions could destabilize the political landscape, especially in opposition-led states.

“For a politician who prides himself as a defender of democracy, President Tinubu should know better than to involve the military in governance. The precedent set by former President Obasanjo in keeping the military out of politics should be respected,” Kwankwaso stated.

He called on the judiciary to remain impartial and ensure that decisions related to the crisis in Rivers State are handled fairly and without external influence.

Kwankwaso urged political leaders to uphold democratic values and constitutional order, stressing that the situation in Rivers State does not justify the flawed application of Section 305(1) of the 1999 Constitution. He warned that if left unchecked, this action could encourage a culture of political impunity.
