NFF executive committee addresses key issues in Nigerian football

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held a hybrid meeting on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, to deliberate on crucial matters concerning Nigerian football. The key resolutions from the meeting are as follows:

The NFF Executive Committee issued an apology to Nigerians for the poor performance of the Super Eagles in four out of ten matches in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series. The Committee pledged to implement necessary measures to ensure a better-prepared team for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

The Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles within the coming weeks. This move is aimed at strengthening the team ahead of the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the remaining World Cup qualifying matches.

The NFF plans to bolster its Technical Department with more qualified personnel. Additionally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will undergo immediate restructuring to improve its effectiveness.

Despite challenges during the preparations for recent World Cup qualifying matches due to a nationwide industrial action, the NFF expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of some players. The Committee decided to enhance its scouting program to identify Nigeria-eligible players worldwide who can significantly contribute to the national team.

A Stakeholders’ Forum will be convened soon to discuss amendments to the current NFF Statutes in collaboration with FIFA.

While the preparation of teams for the Olympic Games is the responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, the NFF committed to providing robust support to the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons, for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in France from July 24 to August 11, 2024.

To ensure the U20 Women National Team, Falconets, perform impressively at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia (August 31 – September 22, 2024), the NFF approved a two-phase preparation program. This includes a four-week training camp in Nigeria followed by a two-week final camp in Colombia.

The Committee praised the U17 Women National Team, Flamingos, for their performance in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup African qualification series. The Secretariat has been tasked with ensuring the team is fully prepared for their final qualification match against Liberia at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on Friday, June 14, 2024.
