The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai.
In a tribute released on Wednesday, the NFF described Rufai—fondly known as “Dodo Mayana”—as a towering figure in Nigerian football whose impact transcended generations.
“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the statement read. “Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Rufai was widely celebrated for his leadership, agility, and heroics in goal, earning over 60 caps for Nigeria and representing the country in two FIFA World Cup tournaments. His contributions remain etched in the history of Nigerian football.
The NFF and the wider football community have extended condolences to Rufai’s family, friends, and fans around the world.
