In a continued effort to enhance security and combat illegal arms proliferation in the Niger Delta region, personnel from the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended a suspect in possession of a significant cache of arms in Eleme-Ifoko Community, Degema Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.
The suspect, whose identity has been withheld pending investigation, was found with a variety of weapons, including one AK-47 rifle, three AK-47 magazines, 36 rounds of 7.62mm x 39mm ammunition, three smoke grenade launchers, and one locally made rifle. These weapons, often used in criminal and insurgent activities, pose a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
The Navy’s swift action came as a result of targeted intelligence gathering, indicating the presence of illegal arms in the area. Upon discovering the suspect and his weapons cache, FOB BONNY personnel immediately moved in to secure the arrest and confiscate the arms. The suspect is currently in custody and is undergoing extensive interrogation to ascertain the origin of the weapons, as well as any connections to criminal networks involved in arms trafficking, militancy, or other forms of organized crime in the Niger Delta.
Speaking on the operation, Navy officials emphasized the importance of community cooperation and the role of intelligence in achieving successes in combating armed criminality. The arrest is seen as a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal arms circulation, which has been a persistent challenge in the Niger Delta, often fueling violent conflicts, militancy, and illegal activities such as kidnapping and oil theft.
The discovery of smoke grenade launchers alongside the assault rifle and ammunition adds a concerning element to the case, suggesting the suspect could be linked to more sophisticated criminal operations, possibly involving attacks on security forces or sabotage of critical infrastructure. Smoke grenades are typically used for tactical purposes in conflicts, and their presence indicates a level of preparedness for armed confrontation.
Navy officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with a focus on identifying the suspect’s accomplices and potential suppliers. Security forces are also working closely with other agencies to track down other members of the network and prevent further criminal activities in the area.
Rivers State, and particularly the Degema LGA, has been a focal point of security operations in recent years due to its history of militancy and armed groups operating in the region. The Navy, in collaboration with other security agencies, has ramped up efforts to curtail the activities of armed groups, with operations targeting illegal arms trafficking, oil theft, and piracy.
As part of broader security measures, the Nigerian Navy has been conducting increased patrols and intelligence-led operations across the Niger Delta. The goal is to maintain peace and security, ensure the safety of oil infrastructure, and reduce the region’s vulnerability to armed violence.
Authorities are urging local communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, stressing the importance of public collaboration in supporting security efforts. This latest arrest is seen as a positive step in the ongoing campaign to rid the Niger Delta of illegal arms and reduce the influence of criminal elements.
The Navy assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure justice is served, and further details regarding the investigation will be released as the inquiry progresses.
