President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on Nigeria’s senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons, following their historic 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) victory in Morocco.
At a presidential reception in Abuja, the President awarded each of the 24 players and 11 technical crew members the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). He also directed the allocation of one three-bedroom apartment to each team member under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
In addition, Tinubu approved a cash reward equivalent to $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each member of the technical team.
“You have inspired millions—especially young girls—who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable,” the President said, describing the team as a beacon of hope for the nation.
He recounted the emotional moments of the final match, admitting initial reluctance to watch due to nerves, but ultimately joining the nationwide celebration after the team’s triumph. “You ignited the spirit of resilience and unity across the country,” he added.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting women’s football and youth development. “In this era of Renewed Hope, we celebrate you not just as champions of Africa, but as champions of the Nigerian dream,” he stated.
In further recognition, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, represented by its Chairman, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced an additional ₦10 million donation to each player and coach on behalf of the 36 state governors.
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, lauded the Super Falcons as role models and praised their determination and fighting spirit. “You reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football,” she said.

Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, expressed gratitude on behalf of the team and dedicated their 10th WAFCON title to the nation. “This victory is for every young girl in Nigeria who dares to dream,” she said.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, hailed the team’s achievement as a symbol of unity and national pride. He credited the Tinubu administration’s ongoing investments in sports and women’s empowerment for creating the foundation for success.
The reception marked a high point in the nation’s celebrations of the Super Falcons’ milestone 10th WAFCON title—cementing their place as the most successful women’s football team in Africa.
