The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Nigeria Office recently organized an event aimed at equipping and empowering young Nigerian entrepreneurs with the skills to utilize intellectual property (IP) rights for business development and financing strategies.
Held at the UN House in Abuja, the event, titled Intellectual Property Skills Acquisition, Learning, and Youth Entrepreneurship (IP SALAYE), specifically targeted participants of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The primary objective of the event was to provide an avenue for National Youth Corps Members to showcase their innovations to potential investors, mentors, NYSC officials, and members of the entrepreneurial community. Through this platform, young entrepreneurs were afforded the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity while also networking with key stakeholders in the business and IP sectors.
Participants had previously undergone training in a workshop where they were equipped with the necessary knowledge to address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) challenges within their local communities, as well as instructed on how to safeguard their innovations through appropriate IP mechanisms.
#IPSALAYE, an IP awareness program tailored for young entrepreneurs enrolled in the NYSC program in Nigeria, serves multiple purposes:
Learning Platform: It serves as a platform for young entrepreneurs to gain insights into the effective utilization of IP in fostering successful businesses.
Networking Opportunity: The event facilitates connections between young entrepreneurs and seasoned business and IP experts, fostering mentorship and knowledge exchange.
Celebrating Success: #IPSALAYE also celebrates success stories of young entrepreneurs who have successfully leveraged IP for business growth, inspiring others to follow suit.
By providing a comprehensive platform for IP education, networking, and celebration of entrepreneurial achievements, WIPO’s IPSALAYE initiative aims to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among Nigerian youth, contributing to the country’s economic growth and sustainable development.
