Zulum condoles families of 63 killed in Boko Haram attack

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has visited Darajamal community in Bama Local Government Area to commiserate with families of 63 residents killed in a Boko Haram attack on Friday night.

The casualties include five soldiers and about 58 civilians who were recently resettled in the community after years of displacement.

Governor Zulum, visibly shaken by the scale of the tragedy, met with community leaders and bereaved families, offering words of comfort while condemning the brutal assault.

“We are here to commiserate with the people of Darajamal over what happened last night that claimed many lives. It is very sad. This community was resettled only a few months ago, and residents had resumed normal activities before this unfortunate attack,” Zulum told reporters.

Confirming the figures, he said: “At this moment, we have verified that 63 people lost their lives—about 60 civilians and five soldiers.”

The governor also called for urgent measures to strengthen community security, including the immediate deployment of newly trained Forest Guards to complement military operations in vulnerable areas.

“We must acknowledge that the military’s numbers are not sufficient to cover every location. That is why we trained Forest Guards. They must now be deployed to protect forests and communities from such attacks,” he said.

Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno Central where Darajamal is located, also condemned the killings, describing them as crimes against humanity. He pledged legislative support to Governor Zulum in efforts to restore lasting peace to the state.
